They chose to cave in to the creature comforts of a home and stole in through one’s front entrance slowly, carefully, and with enough deliberation to ensure that neither of them were uncomfortable with the decision. They closed the front door as best as they could, barred it with a couch to keep the elements and monsters at bay, then made their way up the stairs and into a master bedroom, where they shucked cold clothes and wrapped themselves in soft linens.
By the time they’d settled in, a complete whiteout had consumed the world—threatening, by purpose alone, to dismantle their entire operation.
“It’s a good thing we stopped,” Rose said, “huh?”
Dakota nodded, though didn’t respond. His eyes were lost to the mists outside—to the unknown that may or may not walk the streets. Rose was half tempted to join him, if only to see if she could see anything, but given that it was getting darker by the minute, she knew it was useless and instead settled down on the bed.
“Are you tired?” she decided to ask after a moment’s hesitation.
“I’m always tired,” he replied.
“I mean, tired enough to sleep.”
“Oh,” he replied, as if realizing that he’d misspoken. “No. I’m not.”
“Are you okay?”
“I’m just nervous, Rose. That’s all.”
“Well, there’s nothing to be nervous about. We’re going to be fine.”
“I just don’t understand why they couldn’t let us take a vehicle,” the young man sighed.
“Because they’re not ours, for one,” Rose returned. “And for two: we’re more discreet on foot.”
“Maybe so… but it doesn’t make this journey any easier.”
“No. It doesn’t.”
Rose drew a blanket up her body and covered herself up to the waist before leaning back against the headrest and crossing her arms over her chest. The chill still hadn’t left her bones, her muscles, her skin. How Dakota could manage standing by the cold window she didn’t know, but regardless, she couldn’t worry about that, not when it was becoming quickly apparent that his head wasn’t completely in the game.
“Can I ask you something?” she asked.
“Yeah,” he replied, but still did not turn to face her.
“You’re not gonna lose it on me, are you?”
This time, he turned to face her. “No,” he said, extending the vowel as though testing it on his thin lips. “What makes you think that?”
“Nothing. Just checking.”
“Rose—”
“Don’t worry about it, Dakota. Seriously.” She paused. When he finally stepped away from the window and came to stand beside the bed, she patted the space beside her on the mattress and said, “I know you’re nervous. Just don’t start freaking out on me, okay? This isn’t a hopeless situation. We’ll weather this storm, find the medicine, make our way back to the Fort, and Arnold will be perfectly fine. Don’t you worry.”
“I am worried about one thing though.”
“What?”
“What the military will say once they search our packs.”
Rose frowned. “Sorry?” she asked.
“If we find medicine,” he continued, “and they search our packs, they’re probably going to confiscate it on the pretense that it’s for the greater good. Besides—even if
